Google AI Overviews are the AI-generated summaries that appear at the top of search results — above the organic links, above ads, above everything. They launched globally in 2024 and now appear for a significant and growing proportion of searches, particularly informational and local queries. For businesses and content creators, being cited in an AI Overview is the new first-page ranking. Here's how they work and how to get in them.

What Google AI Overviews actually are

AI Overviews are generated by Google's Gemini AI model, which reads and synthesises content from multiple web sources to produce a brief, structured answer to a search query. The answer appears in a styled box above the traditional results, with linked citations to the sources it drew from.

Unlike traditional featured snippets (which pulled text from a single ranked page), AI Overviews synthesise from multiple sources and generate new text rather than just quoting. This means a page doesn't need to be the top-ranked result to be cited — it needs to contain clear, credible, well-structured information that AI can incorporate into its synthesis.

Which searches trigger AI Overviews?

Google currently shows AI Overviews most frequently for:

  • How-to and instructional queries ("how to set up a Google Business Profile")
  • Definition and explanation queries ("what is LocalBusiness schema")
  • Comparison queries ("what's the difference between GBP and Bing Places")
  • Local recommendation queries ("best electrician near me" — where local pack data is integrated)
  • Complex multi-part questions where a list-based answer is natural

Transactional queries (product purchases, direct bookings) still show traditional results more prominently, though this is evolving. Highly contested or YMYL (Your Money Your Life) topics often see limited AI Overview presence where Google is cautious about synthesised health or financial advice.

What gets cited in an AI Overview?

Google's Gemini model selects sources based on signals that align closely with what Google has always valued, but weighted differently:

E-E-A-T signals are more important than ever

Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness — Google's long-standing content quality framework — is the foundation of AI Overview source selection. Pages written by someone with demonstrated expertise, published on authoritative sites, with evidence of real experience (first-person accounts, original data, specific case examples) are heavily favoured. Generic AI-generated content or thin pages with no author authority rarely appear.

Clear, structured answers near the top of the page

AI Overviews pull from content that gives a clear, direct answer early — typically in the first few paragraphs or in a clearly labelled section. If your article buries the answer to the query in paragraph 8, it's much less likely to be cited than one that leads with the key information and expands from there. Write for the inverted pyramid: answer first, context second, detail third.

Schema markup helps AI understand content structure

HowTo schema, FAQ schema, and Article schema help AI understand the structure of your content and what type of answer it provides. A page with properly implemented FAQ schema that directly answers common questions is significantly more likely to be cited in an AI Overview for those questions than an equivalent page without schema.

Page authority and domain trust

Traditional SEO authority still matters. Pages on domains with established trust signals — inbound links from credible sources, long publishing history, high organic rankings — are more likely to be selected as AI Overview sources. This doesn't mean you need Domain Authority 70 — highly specific, authoritative content on a new but correctly set up domain can and does appear. But domain trust is a tiebreaker when content quality is similar.

The AI Overview formula

Write content that directly answers the question in the first paragraph. Structure it with clear headings. Add FAQ schema. Demonstrate real expertise in the content. Publish on a credible domain. Promote it to earn a few inbound links. This combination — consistently applied — is what gets pages cited in AI Overviews.

Practical changes to make your content AI Overview-ready

  1. Lead with the answer. Every piece of content that targets a question should answer that question in the opening paragraph, before any preamble or context-setting.
  2. Use clear, hierarchical headings. H2 for main sections, H3 for sub-sections. AI Overviews frequently pull from content that's easy to parse by structure.
  3. Add FAQ sections. A section of 4-6 questions and answers at the bottom of an article, with FAQ schema markup, gives AI multiple additional entry points to cite your content.
  4. Write with specificity. "Add LocalBusiness schema to your homepage using JSON-LD" is more likely to be cited than "improve your website's technical setup." Specificity signals expertise.
  5. Include original data or examples. AI Overviews favour content that contains something not found elsewhere — original research, specific case studies, personal experience that adds unique value.
  6. Implement Article or HowTo schema. Appropriate schema markup helps Gemini understand what type of content the page provides and how to use it in an overview.

For local businesses specifically

Local queries that trigger AI Overviews often integrate Google Business Profile data directly into the overview, alongside web citations. For local businesses, this means the GBP optimisation work (complete profile, detailed service list, high-volume reviews) is inseparable from AI Overview performance. A business with a complete GBP and strong reviews will be integrated into local AI Overviews — a business without these won't appear even if their website content is excellent.
