ChatGPT vs Perplexity: How Citations Work Differently (and What to Do About It)

Chris · June 2026 · 7 min read

ChatGPT cites brands 0.59% of the time. Perplexity cites them 13.05%. That's a 22-times difference between two platforms that most people treat as interchangeable. They're not — they have completely different citation logic, different data sources, and different behaviours that require different strategies. If you're trying to get found in AI search and treating ChatGPT and Perplexity as the same problem, you're solving for neither.

Why the gap exists: two very different approaches to "finding answers"

Think about how each platform works. Perplexity is essentially a real-time search engine layered with AI — it crawls the live web when you ask a question, reads current sources, and cites them explicitly in every response. It's more like a librarian who shows you exactly which books they pulled from. On average, Perplexity includes 21.9 citations per response.

ChatGPT, by contrast, primarily draws on its training data and only browsed the live web on certain queries until its May 2026 update expanded live browsing significantly. Even when it does cite sources, it's more selective — averaging 10.4 citations per response, and often synthesising without attribution. It's more like a knowledgeable mate who's read a lot and gives you their take, sometimes without saying exactly where they heard it.

"Only 11% of domains cited by ChatGPT are also cited by Perplexity — each platform uses fundamentally different citation logic."

The overlap between the two platforms' citation pools is tiny. Getting cited by one does not mean you'll be cited by the other. They're almost entirely separate problems.

How to get cited by Perplexity

Perplexity is the more "traditional SEO-adjacent" of the two. Because it's crawling the live web, it looks for content that:

  • Answers questions directly and quickly. Perplexity is parsing your page in real time. The answer to the question someone asked needs to be in the first paragraph — not buried in section four after a preamble about your company history.
  • Is well-structured with clear headings. Perplexity can extract h2 and h3 headings as section markers. If your page has clear, descriptive headings that match what people actually search, you're far more likely to get pulled.
  • Is on an indexed, crawlable site. Basic but critical. Your robots.txt shouldn't block crawlers, your page should load fast, and your content should be in actual HTML — not locked behind JavaScript rendering that Perplexity can't process.
  • Contains specific facts, numbers, and named entities. Perplexity's AI looks for citable specifics. "Our service is great" gets ignored. "Our boiler servicing typically takes 90 minutes and covers parts and labour" is citable.
  • Appears on authoritative domains. Coverage on local news sites, industry publications, directories, and recognised platforms all increase your chance of being pulled into a Perplexity response.
The Perplexity test

Search for your own business or a question your customers would ask on Perplexity right now. If you're not in the results, look at what is. Those pages are your benchmarks — study their structure, their opening paragraphs, and how directly they answer the question.

How to get cited by ChatGPT

ChatGPT is a different beast. Because it primarily draws from its training data (a snapshot of the internet up to its cutoff, plus live browsing on some queries), getting into ChatGPT responses is less about individual page optimisation and more about building presence at scale.

Be talked about in the right places

ChatGPT's training data skews towards Reddit, Wikipedia, industry forums, review aggregators, GitHub, YouTube transcripts, news sites, and widely-linked blog posts. If your business or content appears in these places — genuinely, not through spam — you're building into the dataset ChatGPT trusts.

Practically: get customers to write about you on Reddit local subreddits (authentically). Get reviewed on Trustpilot, G2, or Capterra if you're B2B. Get written about in local or industry press. Join industry associations that maintain public member directories.

Appear across multiple independent sources

ChatGPT gains confidence in a business when the same positive signal appears across multiple independent sources with consistent messaging. If five different places all describe you as "the best emergency plumber in Sheffield" or "the go-to accountant for freelancers," ChatGPT builds that association.

This is why one great piece of press coverage isn't enough. You need breadth. The AI Search School community gets into this in much more depth — if you want to go further, it's a free join and this stuff gets discussed in real time as platforms change.

Live web browsing (post-May 2026)

Since its May 2026 update, ChatGPT has significantly increased how often it browses the live web — and how often it links directly to business websites in responses. This makes traditional Perplexity-style page optimisation increasingly relevant for ChatGPT too. Clear, fast, well-structured pages that answer questions directly are now useful for both.

Should you optimise for both?

Yes, but understand you're doing different work. The good news is there's significant overlap in the foundation: consistent brand information across platforms, a fast and well-structured website, genuine mentions in credible places, and content that answers questions directly. Build that foundation first.

The divergence happens in the second layer. For Perplexity, it's about live page optimisation — structure, speed, specificity. For ChatGPT, it's about building breadth of presence across the web's most trusted sources over time.

Bottom line

Don't treat AI search as one thing. ChatGPT and Perplexity have fundamentally different citation logic. Build the shared foundation first (consistent identity, clear content, credible mentions), then layer in platform-specific work. The businesses winning at AI search in 2026 are doing both.

Frequently asked questions

Which is better for business visibility — ChatGPT or Perplexity?

Perplexity cites businesses far more frequently (13.05% citation rate vs ChatGPT's 0.59%), making it currently the higher-opportunity platform for direct business citations. However, ChatGPT has a far larger user base, so even a low citation rate represents significant reach. Aim for both.

Can I track whether my business is being cited in ChatGPT or Perplexity?

Manually: search for questions your customers ask on both platforms and see if your business appears. There are also emerging AI visibility monitoring tools (Otterly, Peec.ai, and others) that track this automatically, though they're still maturing in 2026.

Does getting cited on Perplexity help with ChatGPT?

Not directly — only 11% of domains appear on both platforms, which shows how separate their citation pools are. However, the underlying work that earns Perplexity citations (clear content, credible external mentions, good site structure) does contribute to the kind of broad web presence that also helps ChatGPT over time.

How long does it take to start appearing in AI search results?

Perplexity is faster — if your page is well-optimised, it can appear in responses within days of crawling. ChatGPT is slower because it's largely dependent on training data updates, which are periodic rather than continuous. For live browsing queries on ChatGPT, the timeline is closer to Perplexity, but for general recommendations it can take months of sustained presence-building.

Should small local businesses bother with both platforms?

Yes. AI usage for local search grew 7.5x in a single year (from 6% to 45% between 2025 and 2026). Both ChatGPT and Perplexity are being used to find local businesses. The cost of ignoring either platform is growing every month.

If you need to monitor citations across both platforms at once rather than checking manually, StackProven's guide to tracking brand mentions in ChatGPT covers the free and paid options.
